Technical and Military Imperatives: A Radar History of World War II is a coherent account of the history of radar in the second World War. Although many books have been written on the early days of radar and its role in the war, this book is by far the most comprehensive, covering ground, air, and sea operations in all theatres of World War II. The author manages to synthesize a vast amount of material in a highly readable, informative, and enjoyable way. Of special interest is extensive new material about the development and use of radar by Germany, Japan, Russia, and Great British. The story is told without undue technical complexity, so that the book is accessible to specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Excellent & Thorough study of the history of Radar especially in the 1930s & 1940s.
By Richard C. Blum
This is a very thorough discussion of radar's start up and design & use progress in the 1930's and 1940's by the US, Britain, Japan & Germany. This study has a good sprinkling of technical designs, manufacturers in all countries and the magnetron type numbers and who made them. Best book I've read in a long time.

Improvement is necessary for future editions
By N. Alexander
The book is an extremely valuable, comprehensive and trusted source of information about all principal aspects and many details of the radar before and in time of the WWII, except one minor aspect. This is the pre-war history of radar R&D in the USSR. The author cites only one reference - a book by a Soviet general M. Lobanov, who supervised the gun laying radar developments in the 1930s, written in 1975. Still it is clear that the author could not read Russian and so had the book translated by someone. It looks like not all the book was translated or read, because too many facts, names and organizations are twisted, mixed up and simply omitted. This old Sovet book gives much better vision and proper names and facts than those reproduced by L. Brown. Still today exist other sources on this topic. In some sad way, the mentioned deficiency continues long tradition in the English-centered literature of neglecting and not accurate using the information available about the radar in the USSR even if it is scarce. The tradition started when someone in America in 1944 made a capital error in the name of one of two Russians who measured a real cavity magnetron in 1937 and published it in 1940 (in Russian) - correct name Malyarov or Maliarov was twisted and printed as "Malairov". And so, forever in English/USA publications the poor guy is "Malairov". L. Brown, in similar way, twisted the history of the research radar Zenit and presented it in a most sardonic way as an example of the worst radar development existed at that moment. I am not going to discuss this in details. I'd like only to note that, first, in the mentioned boook of Gen. Lobanov the story of Zenit is given with great sympathy and his evaluation of that achievement is clearly highly positive, at least at the time of 1938-39 testing. Second, the subsequent failure of the project was not a result of bad engineering, as it is presented by L. Brown, but rather of the Orwellian circumstances of the Soviet life in the late 1930s. The story of Zenit can be read in A.A. Kostenko, et al., "Development of the first Soviet three-coordinate L-band pulsed radar in Kharkov before WWII", IEEE Antennas Propagat. Magazine, 2001, vol. 44, no. 3, pp. 28-49. I hope that this story and proper names of people and organizations, and also principal facts, will be presented in better way when, if ever, this book is published as a next edition.

Monument to a fascinating technology
By F.A.S. Sterrenburg
Brown began his studies on World War II radar development "because the book he would have liked to read did not exist". The outcome is a book almost any reader would love to have written! Although radar became an esoteric subject almost from the beginning, the necessary technical background is presented clearly and the reader does not have to be an electronics specialist to enjoy the superb panoramic view Brown presents of the development of a technology that changed the face of war - and that of peace as well! Even if one is familiar with the subject, surprises start popping up in the first dozen pages or so. This is not an updated version of the books that have gone before but something new. In the first place, it is based on massive, critical and thoroughly documented research. Secondly, it does not focus on the efforts of just one or two participants in the radar epos - be it the Germans, British, American, the naval or air forces. Instead it describes the almost simultaneous and often comparable developments that took place before and during the war worldwide. Critical, and thus well-known, subjects like the role of radar in the Battle of Britain are dealt with, of course, but even here fresh insights are offered. And besides, many epic events that have unjustly been "forgotten" - such as the Japanese forces that were NOT to be found on Attu Island - are described. Even the selection of the photographs (of excellent quality) bears testimony to a fresh approach. Almost invariably, mention of the German Seetakt radar has been accompanied by pictures of the burning wreck of the Admiral Graf Spee. Here we see an intelligence officer's nightmare (or delight!): a German Torpedo School ship with Seetakt antenna in full view - in a freely available 1939 pocketbook! What makes the story so coherent is that radar is firmly placed in the context of the military operations: it shows how the brighter warriors exploited the new technology and how the dumber authorities goofed. And finally, there is a wealth of anecdotes, from the horrific to the hilarious. I find Brown's Radar History just as good as R.V. Jones' "Most Secret War": serious but light-footed, and very well written.

Amazon.com Review
Donald J. Trump is an icon: the very definition of the American success story. The star of The Apprentice and developer of some of the planet's most prestigious real estate, he's been on the bottom and risen to become one of the world's wealthiest men.

Bill Zanker started The Learning Annex with $5,000 and grew it into a $5 million a year company. That was before he met Donald Trump. Thirty months later, after Zanker learned to think BIG himself, The Learning Annex is generating over $100 million a year in sales--and still growing.

Together, they're living examples of how thinking BIG and knowing when to back up your opinions aggressively--regardless of what your critics or opponents might say--can help you maximize your personal and professional achievements. For the first time ever, you too can learn Trump's secrets to thinking BIG and kicking ass! Learn:

  • Real-life stories from people who've applied the think BIG formula in their own lives.

These strategies are proven and attested to by those who've learned to think BIG from Donald Trump and found success in their own lives. Bill Zanker used Donald's strategies to grow the revenues of The Learning Annex twenty times in under three years. Both of them have been down and out, and know what it's like to feel the whole world's against you--and both have risen to dizzying heights of success by thinking BIG and kicking ass! It is an attitude that can be easily learned.

Questions for Donald Trump

Amazon.com: Was there ever a time when you didn’t think big enough?

Trump: I don't think so. I always had big plans, even when I was very young. I would build skyscrapers with my building blocks.

Amazon.com: What was your first impression of your co-author Bill Zanker when you started doing business with the Learning Annex?

Trump: Bill Zanker had tremendous enthusiasm and focus, and he still does. I knew he'd succeed in a big way, and the success of The Learning Annex proves that I was right.

Amazon.com: What has becoming a television star on The Apprentice meant for your business?

Trump: My brand became more famous as I became more famous, and more opportunities presented themselves. I was already very well established, so I was well prepared, but things escalated and in a good way.

Amazon.com: There are stories everywhere that the real estate market is in trouble. How should an investor or an entrepreneur respond to the current market?

Trump: This is actually a very good time for entrepreneurs or investors. I would say to be positive and look for the opportunities, because the opportunities are there.

Amazon.com: You're critical of the "give me" attitude that you see in many young people today. What do you look for in a young person you are bringing into your business?

Trump: They have to be eager to learn and willing to work hard. I work hard and I expect the people around me to have a strong work ethic. I need people who can be part of a team and yet be able to think independently. That's one of the qualities I look for on The Apprentice--they have to be capable of both dimensions.

Amazon.com: Did you really make Lee Iacocca cry? [See Think Big and Kick Ass for more details.]

Trump: No, he made himself cry.

An excellent exercise in how to approach life, work, & business to make the best of your life - emotionally & financially!
By AMeador1
I grew up very financially poor. Being poor was a major motivator to my parents whom were always very entrepreneurial minded - always trying to think of what they might be able to produce, invent, resale, etc… to try to better our financial situation. One of the common concepts was the idea of the "American Dream" - that anyone can do practically anything if they really put their mind to it, work hard, and think big. Following the idea that you can move from poor to rich based on your own actions, decisions, perseverance, etc…

I agree and I took this mentality to heart. I have been determined since I was very young that I would one day be rich! It is not unattainable or impossible. Too many people set arbitrary limitations on themselves, or think the system is stacked against them, or whatever excuse they use to keep from making the mental leap that can actually get them there. It's a shame. And, although I have not gotten rich (YET!), I am still in pursuit of that goal. Sometimes the obstacles are hard to resolve - depending on your interests and where you are in life. But the idea is still valid and the end result is attainable.

Donald Trump and Bill Zanker have laid out this exact concept PLUS some in this book. There is a definite mental attitude that has to be adopted to be able to make it big but I believe as they've said in this book that it is proportional to the level of "think big" you settle on. If you're idea of thinking big is to make $100K a year as a VP on some company and you truly put in the work and effort - you can get there. But this is a self-limiting barrier. Why not the owner of the company? Why not "THE" company in that arena? Why not a multinational corporation selling franchises in that business?

I like the fact that in this book they make the point that you still need real knowledge. You have to know what you are doing. You don't simply slap on a strong, confident face and attitude portraying "I know what I'm doing, so you should just go along because I have a strong personality!" No. You need real knowledge to go into the deal. Read, study, work in the field, etc… But gain real knowledge. Put that together with a confident, charismatic, can-do attitude and you have a winning combination. Without that, you're just a con man that can't fulfill your promises. People will feel more comfortable trusting you because you can talk the talk and if you follow through and get the job done - you establish credibility.

Never get complacent or overconfident to the point of allowing what you're building to come to a standstill or even fall apart.

To be successful is a lot of work. It requires real knowledge - expertise in the field. It requires risk. It requires learning from failure. Getting back on the horse to keeping on moving forward.

I think Donald Trump is the epitome of the "American Dream"! Even though he started out with a pretty successful company started by his father, he still had hardships that brought him down to practically nothing - working out of his limousine as an office. And he built himself back up a magnitude above what he started with. Purportedly, he was given a $40 million company from his father. Yet he has built that into a $10 BILLION company - that's 250 times larger. This didn’t happen because he is a bloviating bombastic baboon… No. It took focus, a huge amount of work, dedication, etc… He suffered the consequences in some areas to work at this level, where he admits he made mistakes, in his failed marriages due to too much focus on work verses his wives. There is a lesson to learn in this - prioritization and balance has to be a factor in the process.

Bill Zanker was successful - but with Donald Trump's push - he went to places in his business that he never thought possible. Think big!

This is a very inspirational book. It is a good read to get into Donald Trump's mindset. Is it bombastic, obnoxious, over-the-top, conceited? I personally don't think so. He has pride in his accomplishments. He has a very strong and positive attitude.

He makes the point, which in his current Presidential run he has shown by example, that if you are attacked, attack back - 10 times harder! Make the attacker think twice about doing it again. How often have we heard and experienced the bully who is confronted - sternly - that then backs off and stops the bullying. I don't see examples of Trump initiating bullying - but when he is confronted with it - he meets it head on - in force. He's right - it usually stops the bullying.

These are ideas that I have grown up with. Do a good job and be proud of it - why hide it or feel ashamed of it? It is so odd to me that so many people attack him over his personality - yet are in favor or the "trophies for everyone" logic to improve the self-esteem of kids. Kids who did not earn their reward, who become overly confident in themselves with no true basis in their over-confidence. They expect, demand, and become overbearing and obnoxious for real as they have no true basis for their attitudes. Yet when Trump, Rush Limbaugh, or others who have not only succeeded, but excelled show a high level of confidence in themselves, which they've EARNED, they are condemned for their attitudes. It is something to look up to and to emulate. Showing confidence in one's self, based on actual accomplishments and a can do attitude, followed by actual follow through is to be expected - not criticized.

My only minor complaint about the book is that sometimes it was not apparent when Donald Trump was writing to when it transitioned to Bill Zanker. I didn't notice the transition until the context made it apparent - like when Zanker would make a reference to The Learning Annex. It would have been a nice little bit of editing to clarify these transitions a little better. But other than that, an excellent exercise in how to approach life, work, and business to make the best of your life - emotionally and financially!

Thank you Donald Trump and Bill Zanker!

(And I hope you make a lot of money selling your books!)

New Insight into Trump
By ray'sreview
I bought this book to see if it would give me some insight into Trump's behavior during this 2016 election year. It did not disappoint. Probably the greatest revelation is found in his chapter entitled "REVENGE". If someone attacks him he attacks them back and does so "in spades". You may not agree with his formula for winning but you'll understand why he does what he does. So far his strategy seems to be working.

I highly recommend all that Donald J
By Amazon Customer
OUTSTANDING BOOK ... I highly recommend all that Donald J. Trump said in this book. However, there is a writer who also is quoted at the end of each chapter summarizing what Mr. Trump said. I did not care to read what the writer said. My interest was only learning from Mr. Trump's philosophy and his own experiences. The book was inspirational, instructive, interesting, and with a positive tone that provided ways of going about improving one's own life. Again I highly recommend the book and would buy it again. Thank you.

The protagonist's arrogance and greed lead to his undoing
By NoteBleue
Early in the book, a police lieutenant tells the protagonist that being overconfident is a sure way to get sucker-punched but the latter doesn't heed the warning. The plot is rather typical: a cad marries a homely rich heiress for money and then plots to murder her with the help of her comely secretary. The story is told in flashback so the outcome is more or less known from the start. Chase still manages to add a few twists and turns along the way. But there's a feeling you've read something like it before.

One of Chase good thrillers.

This one is a real thriller. In the same class as "Tiger by the tail" or "One Bright Summer Morning". Enjoyed reading it. Hope Amazon brings all the Chase titles to the kindle library.

Still works
By Amazon Customer
I read the earlier edition years ago. It's a positive, upbeat book about creating multiple "profit centers" (or income streams, if you prefer to think of it that way) and planning for those "spaghetti days" when nothing is coming in. I wasn't as prepared then as now to put those principles in place, so I'm happy to have the revised edition.

What I like best is that he provides a broad enough spectrum of ideas in his books so that none of them are industry-specific. (By contrast, a lot of consulting books focus on only management consulting and many freelance books focus on journalism or advertising when you might be in IT, interior design, or tutoring.)

The Guru of Guerilla Marketing knows his stuff. So far, I never met a Levinson book I didn't like.

Ignore the other comments. This book could change your life!

Mel Ziegler started "The Banana Republic" after reading this book. I started my company soon thereafter.
If you have what it takes to question the prevailing paradigm and are determined to be happy at work, you'll find this book a refreshing, important alternative. If they don't get it in Estonia, shame on them, but I know it was the best $10 I ever spent.

Chaotic, destructive, useless
By A Customer
There's one thing you won't learn from this book. It's how to earn money without a job.
For your better orientation, I'd like to divide the book in two parts, calling the pages 1 to 100 Part 1 and pages 101-end Part 2.
Reading Part 1, one gets the feeling that Mr. Levinson has never heard the word "system". Page after page after page he talks about everything and nothing, changing subjects as he pleases and turning back to same things every once in a while. Part 1's as chaotic as a book can possibly be. If you would tear out the pages, throw'em in the air and collect in a random order, it wouldn't make any noticeable difference.
Thus, it's not an easy task to tell you about the contents of Part 1, but I'll try. Mr. Levinson begins by saying that you can earn as much money as you wish by working as little time as you wish. (I'll have a million dollars a day by working 15 minutes a day, thank you very much.) Then, Mr. Levinson starts counting skills and qualities that you just have to have in order to earn money without a job. Some of them can be learned, some can't. If you don't have them - well, sorry pal, maybe that nine-to-five job of yours isn't that bad after all. You must have really strong nerves to read it. No one has ever demonstrated me so convincingly and persistently that I'm no good at anything. I got really depressed for quite some time.
Part 1 doesn't even deserve 1 star. In fact, people should be paid for reading it.
Now, on the page 101, Mr. Levinson starts actually delivering some information. You'd never believe it but in Part 2, there are chapters with clearly defined subjects, in logical order, each chapter dealing with a different subject and with only one subject at a time! You shouldn't hope too much, of course - it's still Levinson. However, because of the Part 2, he deserves 2 stars.
Still, the information provided in Part 2, useful as it may be, is nothing extraordinary and is very far from justifying the book's title.
Summary: The book contains some useful information, but definitely not worth the money. If you read the book anyway, you'd better start on page 101, skipping the first part for good. However, my advice is - don't waste your money on Levinson.

Gr 5 Up—This well-researched biography of Mary Mallon, also known as Typhoid Mary, begins in 1906, when Mallon was hired as a cook for a wealthy family vacationing in Oyster Bay, Long Island. The outbreak of typhoid that swept through the household a few weeks later turned out to be a pivotal event that forever changed her life. George Soper, a sanitation engineer and typhoid expert, was hired to discover the source of the disease. He eventually determined that Mallon was what was known as a healthy carrier: although she experienced no symptoms of typhoid, her body continued to produce the bacteria, which she inadvertently shed. Soper took his discovery to the New York City Board of Health, and soon thereafter, Mallon was arrested and quarantined against her will on North Brother Island. Mallon has often been described as ignorant and a menace to society due to her refusal to stop working as a cook when she was later briefly released from quarantine, but Bartoletti tells the woman's story with empathy and understanding. The author also explores the myriad violations of Mallon's civil rights and her unusually harsh treatment in comparison to other healthy typhoid carriers (nationwide 50 carriers were identified at the time, but only Mary was quarantined). Energetic, even charming prose (chapter headings include "In Which Mrs. Warren Has a Servant Problem") will easily engage readers. Pair this work with Gail Jarrow's Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary (Boyds Mills, 2015). VERDICT Middle grade biography lovers will gravitate toward this compelling title.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

A very well-written biography of the infamous Mary Mallon that will fascinate young readers ...
By Deb
Mary Mallon was a well-kept, attractive Irishwoman who was not averse to working and that she did. Mary’s skills at as a cook served her well and her “fourteen-hour days” would make her well off in comparison to many servants in 1906. Next stop for her was Mr. Charles Elliot Warren’s summer residence on Oyster Bay. Mr. Stricker’s Servants’ Agency had found her a good position, but little did she know that this position would change her life forever. Mary began to cook, “preparing elaborate meals for the Warren family and less elaborate and less expensive meals for the servants.” Unbeknownst to Mary, or anyone for that matter, her hands had been stirring up a recipe for disaster.

Little nine-year-old Margaret was the first to fall ill, but not to worry, children often came down with things. It soon became evident that this was no ordinary illness when “her fever persisted, spiking as high as 105 degrees.” Delirium was certainly not something to be taken lightly nor was bloody diarrhea. The verdict of course, was that little Margaret, with her “telltale skin rash,” had typhoid fever. The disease was contagious and five more people in the household contracted it. Certainly it was something in the water so the house soon became vacant and Mary Mallon would need to find yet another place of employment.

Mr. And Mrs George Thompson, owner of the house in Oyster Bay, were alarmed at the prospect that they had a sick house. Something had to be done and they hired Dr. George A. Soper, “a sanitary engineer who was considered an expert epidemiologist.” If anyone could solve the mystery of the typhoid-ridden household, it would be Soper. His tenacity and excellent detective skills soon sent him on the trail of Mary Mallon. By process of elimination the only source of the “Salmonelli typhi” was the thirty-seven year old cook. Mary was seemingly the epitome of good, robust health, but she was one of those lethal “healthy carriers.” Would he be able to stop her before her hands infected and possibly killed someone else?

This is a very well-written historical overview of “Typhoid Mary,” Mary Mallon. Most young readers have at least had a glimpse at Mary’s life, most likely in a science text. There are many aspects of her life that they don’t know about, especially how she was captured by the the New York City Department of Health. In addition to Dr. Soper, we also meet another doctor, the inimitable Dr. (Sara) Jospephine Baker, Dr. Joe. I found the journey to be a fascinating one, bringing to life a character I’d heard so much about, but obviously knew practically nothing about. In the back of the book is a timeline of Mary’s life (1845 to 1939), source notes, and an expansive bibliography. Many of these book and website resources would make excellent stepping stones for further research in many areas.

Good Primer on "Typhoid Mary" Case and Timely Discussion of Epidemics and Civil Rights.

"Terrible Typhoid Mary" tells the story of the hunt to find the source of an outbreak of typhoid fever in Oyster Bay, Long Island in 1906 and the legal and medical battles involving Mary Mallon, an Irish immigrant cook who, as a healthy carrier of typhoid, infected 24 people in the homes in which she worked. The story begins when Mallon is hired on to cook for the family of Mr. Charles Elliot Warren, who were summering in Oyster Bay. Three weeks later, 9-year-old Margaret fell ill with typhoid fever, followed by five other members of the household. All survived, but the Thompsons, who owned the house, were concerned that they would not be able to rent it, until the source of the infections was discovered. They hired Dr. George Soper, a sanitation engineer with a specialty in epidemiology. He traced the source of the typhoid to the cook, Mary Mallon, excited to have discovered the first "healthy carrier" of the disease in the United States.

At that point, the story becomes a melee of Mary's civil rights, or lack thereof, her justified suspicions of the health authorities, Dr. Soper's scientific ambitions, the obligation of the New York Department of Health to protect the public, and its desire to at least appear to be trying, in spite of the fact that Mallon was far from being the only healthy carrier in New York. Mary Mallon was confined to a cottage on the grounds of Riverside Hospital, a quarantine hospital, without any clear possibility of ever being able to leave. She was understandably reluctant to have gallbladder surgery, which might have secured her release, as she would have (erroneously) been declared cured. She refused to change her name and move out of state, as would have given the NY Department of Health a politically feasible way of washing its hands of the problem. The attorney George O'Neill took up her case before the New York Supreme Court.

It's a timely story, given the recent scares concerning SARS, Ebola, and drug-resistant tuberculosis. Laws governing forced confinement for persons infected with communicable disease have changed since the 1910s, but the issues are same. The tale is made more interesting by the character of Mary Mallon, a reasonably well-spoken woman, independent, a hard worker and good cook, and a competent writer, who would not be cowed. Many people in her situation would have complied with anything asked of them to escape confinement. It's probably wiser that she didn't. Nor did she act responsibly, once she understood that she was infectious. She's a strong character that will evoke strong feelings. I would have liked to understand the politics of the Department of Health better, and the personalities behind it. That is a missed opportunity to address an important topic more fully. But "Terrible Typhoid Mary" is a good primer.

The book is recommended for readers age 10 and up. Ten to thirteen sounds about right. Older readers may feel patronized by the author telling them what issues they should be considering, and they may crave more detail. Fifteen pages of photographs and illustrations contemporary to Mary Mallon can be found in the back of the book, followed by a timeline of events, endnotes, and a helpful bibliography. The material is well-researched and fully endnoted. The author, Susan Campbell Bartoletti, makes frequent reference to a letter that Mallon wrote to the "New York American" newspaper, the only time that Mallon expressed herself to the public, or attempted to do so, apart from a court appearance. A photograph of part of that letter appears among the other photos, but it is surprising that the entire letter was not included, given its significance. I suppose this was in consideration of space. The letter was six pages long, handwritten.

I liked that Bartoletti not only told Mary’s story, but also discussed the culture and ideas of the period

TERRIBLE TYPHOID MARY: A True Story of the Deadliest Cook in America by well-known nonfiction author Susan Campbell Bartoletti tells the story of Mary Mallon, a quiet, hard-working Irish immigrant and who worked as a cook in New York at the turn of the 20th century. Mary caught typhoid disease, and spread it to the various families who she worked for.

I had preconceived, negative thoughts about Mary Mallon, but once I read TERRIBLE TYPHOID MARY, they disappeared; I appreciated that Bartoletti helps readers sympathize with her. At the same time, I liked that Bartoletti not only told Mary’s story, but also discussed the culture and ideas of the period; it was easy to understand why individuals believed certain biological. The author also integrated various sources into the book to clearly and factually illustrate what Mary's life was like.

Although it’s not the author’s fault, I sometimes found the lack of available information frustrating --- many conversations with Mary Mallon were not documented and there is little information about her family life.

At the beginning of TERRIBLE TYPHOID MARY, Bartoletti warns that people uncomfortable reading about diseases should not continue reading the book, and I agree. However, I would definitely recommend it to people who enjoy reading about medical conditions and history.
