Review
A solid... insightful explanation of how the Internet has armed the consumer -- which is to say, everyone -- against the mindless blather of corporate messaging attempts. Drop everything and read this book --The Wall Street Journal

In the Internet age, the medium is no longer the message. As Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba show in this extraordinary book, people are now the message. Tens of millions of intrinsically motivated, self-expressive amateur content creators are overturning the old marketing orthodoxies. Citizen Marketers is a brilliant guide to this new landscape. It bursts with so many fresh insights and so much smart advice, you'll need a second highlighter --Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind and Drive

Citizen Marketers has really inspired my thinking and the direction I am taking with my marketing team. Jackie Huba and Ben McConnell have convinced me of the way to engage today's consumer and provide a roadmap for how to do it. --Cammie Dunaway, former Chief Marketing Officer, Yahoo!

From the Inside Flap
The woman sitting next to you at Starbucks focused intently on her laptop may just be determining the next big thing. In coffee houses, offices, homes, dorm rooms, and airport lounges around the world, millions of people use laptops and cell phones to become today's new publishers and broadcasters. Armed with only a broadband connection, these regular citizens are exercising enormous influence on culture and what we buy.  Who are they? What motivates them? In their provocative new book, Citizen Marketers, Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba explore the ramifications of today's burgeoning social media. As everyday people increasingly create content on behalf of companies, brands, or products—to which they have no official connection—they are turning traditional notions of media upside down. Collaborating with others just like themselves, they are forming ever-growing communities of enthusiasts and evangelists using videos, photos, songs, and animations, as well as the "user-generated media" of blogs, online bulletin boards, and podcasts. From the rough to the sophisticated, their creations are influencing companies' customer relationships, product design, and marketing campaigns—whether the companies participate willingly or not. Whether freeing Fiona Apple, building buzz for Snakes on a Plane, or denouncing Dell Hell, citizen marketers are democratizing traditional notions of communication and marketing, even entire business models. Citizen Marketers examines some of the early winners and losers in this new culture of business, as well as some of its most noted constituents.

A changing of the guard amongst key influencers
By Rebecca Clement
In the not-so-distant past, if someone wants to have an impact on the culture at large; launch a new product or win an election their best (and virtually only) bet was engaging traditional print and broadcast media outlets. And whether you were trying to secure an advertising buy or editorial space you also had to deal with "gatekeepers" - those are the editors, producers and sales managers within the media. However, with the continuing rise of the Internet and its democratization of the communication chain - that old-media model is shrinking and eroding daily. Technology and business expert Ben McConnell looks at the juggernaut-like influence and power that has shifted from the old "gatekeepers" to a new class. This new breed of influence peddlers is what McConnell calls Citizen Marketers and it's the title of his book. He defines these individuals as a small group of young, computer savvy hipsters that align their Internet gravitas with any idea, product or brand that happens to fit their particular worldview that day. McConnell stresses that these individuals are influencers in the truest sense since that can quickly mobilize and lead others to action. Soundview highly recommends this book because the powerful phenomenon of citizen marketers will only grow and it can't be ignored.

Hitting the Nail on the Head
By Dave L. Balter
In typical fashion, Jackie and Ben have written a clear and thoughtful book that's easy to understand and easy to get through. Well worth taking the time to read.

To get their points across, they use a number of well-known examples of "citizens" communicating through online channels, but don't just scratch the surface - they've clearly put on their reporting hats, replacing just web anecdotes for real interviews.

The book falls into the trap of having to "put a name" to the scenarios they see. Concepts like "firecrackers" may help the novice understand a certain type of consumer, but experts won't see the value in another pile of terminology thrown into the marketing void.

Jackie and Ben are purists - and limit themselves to only seeing organic behavior as having value, rather than helping companies understand how they can accelerate and augment what's happening the market. Either way, they are at their finest here and have produced a manifesto that's worth buying for all of your clients.

CITIZEN MARKETERS is right on trend as a continuation of the CREATING CUSTOMER EVANGELIST message from respected marketers-turned-authors McConnell & Huba. After all, it's the customer evangelist-turned-citizen marketer that's driving much of the social media we are exposed to on YouTube, MySpace, podcasts, and blogs.

The book is chock-full of useful case studies of "Citizen Marketing" that every corporate marketing manager MUST read today in order to keep their companies relevant tomorrow. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The Silver Falcon, by Katia Fox

Eleven-year-old William yearns for the life of a falconer—training the magnificent birds of prey for the favored sport of medieval England’s nobility. But in the boy’s clubfoot his mother sees a sign from the gods: like the legendary Hephaestus of ancient mythology, William is bound to wield a blacksmith’s hammer. So his future lies in the smoky foundries of a swordmaker rather than the rolling fields of a falcon master.

Then fate plays its hand: William rescues the wounded bird of King Henry himself, gains favor with the grateful monarch, and at last sees his deepest desire within reach. But with his new life as apprentice falconer at a nobleman’s castle begins a tumultuous coming-of-age. The years to come will bring triumph and tragedy, friendship and treachery, truest love and most brutal loss. Yet through it all, he will never stop battling—for justice, joy, and the chance to soar skyward in spirit beside his beloved falcons.

About the Author

Born in 1964, Katia Fox grew up in Germany and southern France, and started her career as an interpreter and translator. After the birth of her third child, she turned her attention to the English Middle Ages and started to research blacksmithing. That research inspired The Copper Sign, the first installment in her captivating trilogy set in medieval England. She lives with two of her three children, splitting her time between Provence and a small town near Frankfurt. She also visits England as often as possible to continue her research. The Silver Falcon is her second novel.

Aubrey Botsford has previously translated novels by Yasmina Khadra and Enrico Remmert. He lives in London.

Fantastic Sequel
By MommaMia
I didn't know that The Silver Falcon was a sequel, until I began reading, so quick like a bunny, I ran out and got myself The Copper Sign and devoured it over three days' time. I thought it was very well done and thus began reading The Silver Falcon. The first book focuses on Ellen, the girl who longed to be a sword smith. She embraces her passion and makes her mark by creating beautiful swords, yet when it comes to her son, she forgets her own headstrong youth and seems to turn into her own mother by repeating the same errors with her own child. William is the illegitimate son of a knight and Ellen the sword maker. He has a deformed foot, which certainly leads his mother to worry excessively about how he will survive in a heartless world. She believes if he is a smith it won't matter about his foot, and pushes the idea despite his obvious love of falconry. Eventually he finds a way to pursue his own dream, much as his mother had done in her own way when she was young. The story of William's misadventures is very well crafted and engages you from the very start. Katia writes very well, and I don't see much being lost in translation. *I am under the impression this book was translated from another language, German I believe. Her characters are well developed, you grow to like them or hate them depending on their personality, immediately. You find it easy to care about them and to cheer at their triumphs and weep along with them in their despair. This book also appears to have been well researched also. This author has been accused of putting a bit too much detail into her descriptions of iron work and I suppose there will be those who believe her descriptions of falconry are also overdone, but I did not find that to be true. I think that the details given were appropriate and worked well into the story.

If you love historical fiction, then give The Silver Falcon a try. I doubt you will be disappointed. This is not simply a historical romance. This story is so much more. This book has substance, purpose and a firm direction. I look forward to more offerings from Katia Fox.

Pretty Good
By C. Smith
Even if you haven't read Katia Fox's first novel, "The Copper Sign" you can enjoy this book. I actually had read it (and enjoyed it) but I have the same complaint about this book that I did about the previous one- "the translation work done on it seems to have left something lacking. The language seems stilted in places and sometimes seems to have been written in language appropriate for a 4th grader. [Even while some of the subjects and events are in no way suited for children and are better suited for adults] This lessened my pleasure while I was reading it, but it did not damper my eagerness for the next book in this series." The only other issue I had with this book was that it seemed to follow the same formula the author used to write "The Copper Sign" basically throughout the 600+ pages the pattern that the author followed is: 1) things are ok 2)something bad happens 3)main character runs/has to leave 4)they just so happen to find the one thing to help them/it finds them. And then the cycle begins again. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but after so many times the cycle becomes obvious and you know when something bad or good is right around the corner. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to adults (too much graphic violence for young children or teens) who read and liked "The Copper Sign"- as well as to anyone who likes historical fiction adventure stories who wouldn't mind the above issues.

...dreams can come true ___________________3 1/2 stars
By eyes.2c
All William wanted to be was a falconer. All his mother wanted him to be was a blacksmith like her. The rescuing of the King's rare white falcon places William's feet on a unforeseen and difficult path that would test and shape him and reveal secrets of kings and commoners. He would experience, fear, poverty, success, love and joy. He would be hunted by powerful enemies and he would talk to kings. He would make true friends and win hearts. His love of falconry would always be his driving force.
Through William's eyes we glimpse fascinating aspects about the art of falconry. In the training of these birds of prey for hunting , seeIing (the sewing together of the bird's eyelids) is part of the common practice. Sickened by this William swears to discover another way to train his birds. As William's story unfolds we are treated to a colourful and intriguing view of life in medieval England during the reigns of Richard and John.
The power of lords and the highborn over the common people, women as bargaining chips in the carving out and consolidation of landholdings and kingdoms, the attitudes towards religion, towards homosexuality, towards illegitimacy; a time when hunting birds are more valuable than human life. All these aspects of medieval times become grist for the mill.
When William despaired I could see the reasons, but some of the happenings seemed a tad too unreal or too rushed. Maybe he grew up too quickly, maybe he is trapped more than I would like to think by the constraints of his time. I enjoyed the book and it certainly it held my attention, even when William was less compassionate in his human relations than I wanted him to be. He is after all a man of his times who has already pushed those boundaries.

The Horizontal Man: A Library of America eBook Classic, by Helen Eustis

Helen Eustis’s The Horizontal Man (1946) won an Edgar Award for best first novel and continues to fascinate as a singular mixture of detection, satire, and psychological portraiture. A poet on the faculty of an Ivy League school is found murdered, setting off ripple effects of anxiety, suspicion, and panic in the hot house atmosphere of an English department rife with talk of Freud and Kafka. This classic novel is one of eight works included in The Library of America's two-volume edition Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s, edited by Sarah Weinman.

Why didn't she write more
By Kevin Brianton
Apart from who killed Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie, this whodunnit has the best trick on a reader I have ever read. Strangely out of print, the book shows the enormous potential that Helen Eustis had as a writer. I wish she had written more of these enjoyable novels.

Engrossing for 99% of the way
By Ron
PLOT: When a young teacher at a college for women is brutally slain, a student becomes the focus of the investigation. Her confession seems to clinch the deal. But another student teams up with a reporter when she feels the accused student (who seems to be having a nervous breakdown) didn't kill anyone. Suspects aren't too many in a small group of academics, each with an attache case full of idiosyncrasies and secrets.

REVIEW: Certainly an easy book to read, with some well-thought out characters, the story zips along from the murder on page 2. Back when this was written the twist was probably more of a surprise, so I felt a little let down at the very end. Plus I thought a few threads begun in the last chapters were left hanging. Not a masterpiece, but still enjoyable.

"The Horizontal Man" in the Library of America
By Robin Friedman
The Library of America has released a two-volume set "Women Crime Writers" (2015) consisting of eight crime novels written by women in the 1940s and 1950s. It is absorbing to work through this collection which is edited by Sarah Weinman, a scholar of women's crime fiction. Helen Eustis' novel, "The Horizontal Man" (1946) is the second book in the collection and the LOA has released it separately as an e-book. Eustis' novel won the Edgar Award for the best first crime novel but has received little subsequent attention.

The novel is set in an Ivy League women's college in the 1940s. The plot revolves around the brutal murder of a young professor of English, Kevin Boyle who had been attractive to many women. The novel presents a small group of characters and suspects, including Molly Morrisson, a young, impressionable student, two colleagues of Boyle, Marks, and Hungerford, a middle-aged woman who exudes sexuality, Mrs. Cramm. Eustis develops each of her characters well. They are interesting for themselves and for their satirical portrayal of university life as well as for their possible role in the murder. Other characters in the novel include the college president who is anxious to avoid unfavorable publicity for the school, a reporter clumsily investigating the murder, and a psychiatrist Dr. Forstmann.

The book's wry observations about love, college life, and literature are at least as important as the solving of the murder. The book has a heavily psychological, Freudian cast evidenced in the portrayal of Forstmann. This mid-20th century novel shows and accepts social and sexual mores different in many respects from those of today. It is valuable to be reminded of changing perspectives to avoid taking one's own point of view as absolute. At one key point of the novel. Forstmann adopts the words of one of the characters and suggests that life can be viewed as exhibiting a "poetry of unreason". Forstmann explains:

"Because psychiatrists aren't intended to be poets, they're scientists, they're obliged professionally to take the dew off the rose and analyze it as H2O. That's their function. But when, on my busman's holidays, I've thought of madness, it seems more easily explained to me as poetry in action. A life of symbol rather than reality. On paper one can understand Gulliver, or Kafka, or Dante. But let a man go about behaving as if he were a giant or a midget, or caught in a cosmic plot directed at himself, or in heaven or hell, and we feel horror -- we want to disavow him, to proclaim his as far as possible removed from ourselves."

The late Helen Eustis (1916 -- January 11, 2015) attended Smith College and did graduate work at Columbia. She wrote several novels and stories in addition to "The Horizontal Man", including a Civil War novel, "The Fool Killer" which in 1965 was made into a film starring Anthony Perkins. In her latter years, Eustis translated several important books from French including "When I was Old" by Georges Simeon.

I was glad to get to know this fine, little-known novel and to learn something about its author. The LOA and Sarah Wineman deserve kudos for preserving the work of women crime writers, including Helen Eustis, as part of America's literature.
