About the Author
Born in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri, Jon Hansen began playing piano at age seven. He was classically trained by several teachers and has a musical background covering classical, blues, rock, jazz, new age, country, etc. At the age of 16, he began composing music and continues to this day. Self-classified as new-age-classical-jazz , he continues to expand his compositions into music s many different genres and facets. Jon has played informal gigs in Kansas City and St. Louis, but prefers a quiet solo career concentrating on his compositions. From 2001 to 2005, Jon worked for Mel Bay Publications, Inc. as project coordinator and as a music editor, editing everything from piano to violin to accordion to dulcimer and so on. As project coordinator he helped hundreds of authors move their projects into the Mel Bay catalog. He was the chief editor of Mel Bay s online webzine, Creative Keyboard® and is author of several Mel Bay piano publications.

About the Author
Larry Percy is Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and an advertising communications consultant. He has worked for a number of leading advertising agencies in the United States, including Lintas and Young and Rubicam, and has taught marketing theory, advertising strategy, and advertising
research at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of several other books on advertising and marketing communications and sits on the editorial board of a number of journals, including the Journal of Marketing Research. He is also a former Industry Director of
the Association for Consumer Research in the United States. Richard Elliott is Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research, Warwick Business School, and prior to this was Professor of Marketing at the University of Exeter. He has worked in brand management with a number of multinationals and was
formerly account manager at the international advertising agency Norman, Craig and Kummel. He has published articles in numerous journals and taught at Lancaster University, the London Business School, and the ESSEC in Paris. His research interests include socio-cultural aspects of advertising,
dysfunctional consumer behaviour, and consumption and self-identity issues.

Not Compatible Across all Kindle Readers

This review is on the compatibility of the ebook. If you plan on reading this book digitally across devices, I don't recommend the ebook version. It cannot be read on the kindle paper white or on the kindle cloud. I returned the electronic version and am now renting.

A pleasure to read

First point - Dave is a personal friend, but I have received nothing for writing this review.

Second point - You shouldn't read this novel if you haven't read the other novels in the series (although the short stories are good but optional).

And Final point - I have said this directly to the author, but he needs to give more description for the aliens; I found it a little difficult to remember who is who sometimes.

And now to the review.

This is the best novel in the series so far. It was engrossing, poignant and at times horrifying. It should the best and worst of humanity. The characters shined, even the new ones, and I found myself wanting more. This is a story of tragedy and triumph, of pain and resolve, of strength and love. And good old-fashioned Science Fiction.

Reminiscent of Battlestar Galactica, Star Gate Universe, Babylon 5 and Stephen R Donaldson's The Gap Cycle, this was a pleasure to read that ended too soon, leaving me begging for more.

This book is why I love to read.

sometimes a review doesn't do a book justice!

Ashes of humanity was well written to the point that it was like reading a letter from a loved one. The torture of finding out that your family has been destroyed and everything you know has changed . I found my self lost in the words, and had to reread pages many times, over and over.
Mr Adams out did himself on this typed out piece of art, a must read in the series. It will leave you wanting more.

I felt like it was more than a bad day/time and in that situation I really expected that they would organize with a governing structure to start getting all the things done that would be required to survive and thrive. Tens of thousands of people cannot be left to fend for themselves, take a look at any of the refuges around the world. They camp side by side but no one takes over unless it is for a selfish reason.

I love Gail and all of her advice however, I was disappointed with this book.
I was hoping for more in depth information that you receive from her show, but unfortunately this book doesn't deliver. If you're already a fan, pass on this one.

If you've never watched her show, then this is a good one to buy.

Maybe it's because I love Gail's no-nonsense approach but...

I found this a really easy read with valuable lessons. It worked well for me as I have her other books and budget plug-ins, but gave it four stars as I really think they need to be tied together. She has a knack for smacking you with reality that I appreciate! If you don't have the budget plug ins, go to her website and get them! They are well worth it!!

Beautiful Neuroanatomy for the non-Medical Neuroanatomist

The illustrations in The Brain Book make it easy to follow, and give a good understanding of the shape and function of the various regions of the brain. It's a great book for those who are already familiar with the basics of neuroanatomy to understand the field more clearly. Advanced nursing students, general biology students, and artificial intelligence students seeking analogies should find this book visually fascinating.

BUT if this book is your first exposure to neuroanatomy, you may find the vocabulary of this immense field overwhelming. The writing is simple enough for bright and determined high school students (or us nonbiologists who've been out of college more than 10 years) to follow in modest doses. Still, don't expect to digest a lot of this material in one sitting. It looks beautiful in the library, but a 14 week course text will overwhelm those who want a 14-day book. Take your time, and go back to this book more than once.

In contrast, if you are a medical student, the text probably does not provide the level of sophistication you expect. As a result, the chapters can seem randomly ordered and the details you want may be impossible to find. Also, you may be aware of other sources of excellent graphic depictions of the brain.

Superbly well illustrated and clearly written in language accessible to the lay person, this introductory text is a must for first year students of neurobiology and could serve as a useful coffee table reference for interested persons outside the medical professions.

massive and comprehensive

Siciliano and Khatib have assembled a massive and comprehensive tome on robotics, circa 2008. Sections of the book can be read by a diverse audience of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and even the general public. Spanning any field associated with the subject.

There is considerable maths in the modelling of robots. Often to understand and control an arm. The multiple degrees of freedom of joints are wonderful for dexterity. But these often give an excursion into advanced linear algebra and control systems theory. Several chapters go into the necessary maths. You probably need at least 2 years of undergraduate engineering maths as preparation.

The myriad applications in which robots have been deployed is amply surveyed in Part F, Field and Service Robotics. In the household, there is of course the floor cleaning Roomba. A cute little gizmo, but it is not a toy; a genuine robot in its own right. The chapter mentioning it also describes an entire genre of competitors; mostly lesser known to the public.

Another chapter on agriculture and forestry talks about using robots for tasks like harvesting. Usually more successful when the terrain is flat and well defined; ie. having only one crop present. While the general case of a robot in hilly, wooded terrain with multiple obstacles and different species of trees is much harder to program.

I also ran into something in this chapter from my past, and it impressed me as to the book's comprehensiveness. At the University of Western Australia, there was a long running program to devise a robot sheep shearer. It started in the 70s and I met several of its researchers. I lost track of it after 1983, but I'd wondered whatever became of it. The book takes up the thread, explaining that the program took on the name Shear Magic, and was ultimately discontinued because it was never fast enough. But even in failure, this robotic application had a side effect. The demonstration of the technology was used by farmers to browbeat human shearers into moderating their wage claims, by playing off longstanding fears of workers about being replaced by machines. Of course, whether or not this was desirable may be a function of your political leanings.

To me, the most interesting section of the entire book concerned mirror neurons. This was a fundamental recent discovery in biology. The relevance to robotics is still perhaps speculative. Several robotics researchers have attempted to use it as inspiration for teaching a robot via its visual input and processing system. This contrasts greatly with the traditional teaching use of rule based formal logic, often involving the predicate calculus. The results described in the text are early but promising.

One slight curiosity is the relative deprecating of military applications. These are numerous and scattered throughout various chapters. Covering uses like landmine detectors, or the aerial Predator and its relatives that have seen much recent use in Iraq and Afghanistan for surveillance and attack. But at the top level of the Contents, there is no section on the military. And if you go to the Index, "military" is absent, while, for example, "mind reading" gets 2 entries. The downplaying of the military is especially puzzling given the historically prominent role of the US military in funding advanced robotics research.

Consequently, from whatever the setting and position the reader is in, this is definitively a book to read and to keep close-by for an informative and consistent "bird's-eye view" of young second language learners.' In this book, although English receives a sizeable amount of attention, it is not the only language treated and we are taken into an array of different social and political circumstances in which learning a language is central to a child's wellbeing...The reports of research in this book set up comparisons and contrasts that offer valuable new insights and areas for reflection... The book's major contribution is that it attempts to gather together research and to make the point that when we are dealing with school-based learning, there is much in the messiness of the contexts of real life to obscure or enrich what the Age Factor brings to the debate and much that we can do through the use of resources or the application of intelligence and good will to make the best of the situation. Comprehensive and complete

It's hard to find a book that gives the broad picture of all products inside Google Cloud Platform, but I found this one comprehensive and complete. The introduction to authentication is particularly useful, as this is something hard to understand just by reading the documentation.

Save your time and money and just read Google's documentation

The authors assume at times that the reader has no background before reading the book. In which they burn up chapters talking about where the internet came from and what a virtual machine is. But then, they go endlessly through api commands to build infrastructure required to develop a cloud application. The net of is that authors meticulously reproduce documentation that is publicly available and has not much substance.

Someone considering purchasing this book would be better served by simply reviewing the online product documentation available from Google.
