Excellent introduction to theory and algorithms for nonlinear optimization

This outstanding book fills the need for a recent introductory graduate textbook in nonlinear convex optimization. The book is divided into 2 parts: Part I deals with theory while Part II deals with algorithms for nonlinear convex optimization. Topics covered in Part I include basic convex analysis, optimality conditions, and Lagrangian duality. There are a number of interesting examples distributed throughout the discussions in Part I - some of these examples include recent concepts like semidefinite programming. The author also highlights the importance of DIFFERENTIABILITY in convex optimization - in fact he devotes separate sections for the optimality conditions of smooth convex and nonsmooth convex problems. Part II discusses algorithms for smooth unconstrained and constrained optimization and finally subgradient, bundle, and trust region schemes for nondifferentiable optimization. The discussion on algorithms for nondifferentiable optimization is new and an important ingredient in this book - for more details one can refer to the 2 volume set by Hiriart-Urruty and Lemarechal. However, there is no discussion on INTERIOR POINT METHODS and this is the only notable omission in the book. For more on interior point methods in nonlinear optimization, one can refer to the recent book by Nocedal and Wright. Personally, I enjoyed this book immensely, and I look forward to using it in a graduate course on nonlinear optimization.

An interesting and useful book

The most important feature of this book is the systematic, theory-driven presentation. Proofs of all statements are supported by instructive examples in statistics, finance, economics, and engineering. The analysis covers a broad array of problems, including nondifferentiable and nonconvex. The chapter on duality contains several interesting economic applications. Methods are presented in a transparent way, with convergence proofs and rate of convergence estimates. The chapter on methods for nondifferentiable optimization is quite valuable, because there are few sources with this material. Solutions to problems, some of which are tricky, would help, and I hope that they will be included in the next edition.

An indispensable book on nonlinear optimization

I'm a recent Ph.D. graduate in Operations Research and during the last 4 years this book has been one of my main tools in both my studies and academic research. This book is a comprehensive introduction to nonlinear programming and is divided in two parts.; Part I covers the main theoretical considerations and Part II covers many important optimization methods. I would say that the main feature of this book is that it manages, in a clear and concise way, to take the reader from the very basics of optimization to advanced and current topics of nonlinear optimization. In particular, it covers the theory and methods of convex optimization of non-differentiable functions where the important concepts of subdifferentials and conjugate duality come into play. From my opinion, these are necessary tools for any aspiring researcher in optimization theory and I haven't seen yet a more understandable and concise presentation of these subjects. Another area where this book shines is in it's examples and applications. Contrary to many mathematical introductory books, I would say that every example of this book is non-trivial and of some theoretical or applied value. It is in these examples and applications where the reader can see the real value of the developed theory and methods. Believe me when I say that more than once you'll be referring back to the examples to get ideas for even your own research. All said, I really enjoyed this book and value highly it's contents.

MUCH better books available

I think the other reviewers must have confused this textbook with another one. This book sucks. They must have been enrolled in Krolik's class on AGN and were brown-nosing to get better grades. This textbook is overdense and you will find yourself reading pages and pages, but learning little about the physics of active galactic nuclei. At times, the work reads more like a philosophical treatise on observing methodology than a textbook to explain the observations and science behind active galactic nuclei. The material is outdated and some of the conclusions found within have since been disproven. The textbook does not discuss the current observations and controversies involved in the study of active galactic nuclei. Typically, when authors use graphics (pictures, plots, etc) they serve to illuminate the material and make it more understandable. Not so with this textbook, it is better to skip the graphics altogether because they do not help in the least. The mathematical proofs are not well-developed here and do not aid in the understanding of the physics.

I highly recommend Bradley Peterson's "An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei" over this textbook. Peterson's book might be thinner (because he sticks to the material and does not digress), but it is much better. It is more up to date and clearly explains observations of AGN and then develops the science behind their operation. The mathematics in this textbook are started at a more fundamental level, but are better developed to allow for a clearer understanding of the physics.

If you read Krolik's tome, you will walk away with a a great dislike of AGN. I was required to buy this book for the course Krolik was teaching at Hopkins. My greatest regret was that I was unable to sell this textbook back to the bookstore.

Prof. Julian Krolik has done it again! His new book "Active Galactic Nuclei: From the Central Black Hole to the Glactic Environment" is a great reference source for astrophyisics, especially in Active Galactic Nuclei. While the reading can be a bit dense and convoluded, the topic is so involving that I couldn't put the book down. If you, like me, love Active Galactic Nuclei, then this is a MUST BUY book. Also, if you are taking one of Prof. Krolik's graduate classes at Hopkins, then I strongly suggest that you read up on his favorite topic. Anyone who buy's the book will NOT be dissapointed with it!!!

Complete coverage of a fascinating topic

This book provides an amazing amount of depth on the exciting topic of AGNs. Although a bit heavy on theory at times (which is to be expected from Krolik), the book covers every topic imaginable, from black hole physics to accretion disk structure. If you work in the field of AGNs, or you want to learn more about the subject, this book is a MUST READ. However, I would only recommend it for advanced undergrads or above.

Wonderful (except for the website)

This book is fantastic--very clear, concise, overall well-written. I have absolutely no background in botany but feel very satisfied and confident with what I've learned from this book. The illustrations are especially well done and are useful in understanding the nuts (no pun intended!) and bolts of plant structures and biological processes.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the website is often not functional or is down.

As a student of forestry, I picked this book up a few years ago in hopes of a more in depth understanding of general botany. I am very glad I did, the book covers a variety of topics in a clear, well explained manner with helpful diagrams and pictures. The book also contains some more "real world" examples of certain aspects of botany. Even today, I often times reference this book when I can't remember specific details concerning plant mophological/physiological processes. This is one of the few textbooks that I had difficulty putting down, I actually ended up reading through the entire text like you would a novel. If you have any interest in botany or just need a reference once in a while, this book is worth a purchase.
