An impressive collection of nineteen articles and essays

Collaboratively organized and edited by Kimberly A. Blessing (Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Buffalo State College) and Paul J. Tudico (Philosophy Department, East Tennessee State University), Movies And The Meaning Of Life: Philosophers Take On Hollywood is an impressive collection of nineteen articles and essays on the impact popular films have had on the popular culture in terms of philosophical values. Organized into five sections, each contributor takes on a specific film ranging from "The Truman Show", to "Fight Club", to "Shadowlands", to "American Beauty", to "Groundhog Day", and more. Enhanced with a section providing descriptive credentials of the individual contributors and a thoroughly "user friendly" index, Movies And The Meaning Of Life is a welcome contribution to academic library "Philosophy" reference collections and highly recommended, accessible reading for film buffs as well.

Moving Pictures and Moving Minds

As a movie buff interested in philosophy, MOVIES AND THE MEANING OF LIFE really jumped out at me as something to check out. I am glad I did. Many people probably think of philosophy as all stuffy, the realm of eggheads. It can be. But it can also be presented to people in a form that is not only accessible, but fun. This book achieves that.

Broken down into five sections and nineteen chapters, MOVIES AND THE MEANING OF LIFE explores some of the deep issues that some of history's heaviest intellects have wrestled with. The essence of reality, personal identity and what it even means to be an individual, religiosity and atheism, how to live one's life, and what one should try to get out of life are all explored. But the exploration, wonderfully, takes place through an examination of Spider-Man, Fight Club, Minority Report and numerous other movies. One of the strengths of the book is that most of the movies are well enough known for the book to be attractive to a good number of people, but with a few lesser known flicks thrown in for good measure.

All the essays are of a fairly good quality. However, as the essays are written by different philosophers, everyone will agree with some interpretations and analyses more than others. Yes, personally I thought the essay for Boys Don't Cry to be just one more piece of feminist drivel, while that for The Truman Show to be thought provoking and interesting. Surely, though, someone else will have different takes on them. It also serves the larger purpose of the book - to get one to think.

One of the few downsides is that the essays are not long enough to do anything more than scratch the surface of the ideas they explore. While I do not want 80 page theses on each movie, cutting the number of movies down to increase the essay size by another five or ten pages might have made the book better. Quality over quantity, I say. But I also say take what you can get.

The publisher of MOVIES AND THE MEANING OF LIFE has published a number of other books exploring philosophy through popular culture. Several look quite interesting and, based upon this one, I will no doubt read more. I recommend you do, as well.

Accessible exploration of Philosophy

This book is accessible to students and armchair philosophers who love movies. At a time where common culture is dwindling, movies seem to be the only thing that links us together. It is also an art form that is vital in a time where novels, sadly, have become a near obsolete form of expression. This book takes ideas and movies seriously. and it also takes movies seriously. It inspired me to take a second look at some of the movies like Being John Malkovich and Memento. Reading Kimberely Blessing's lead piece in the book on Descartes and the movie The Truman Show reminded my how much that particular movie anticipated the rise of reality TV. Truman Show brings Nozick's experience machine thought experiment to life.

Movies and the Meaning of life is a great as a supplement for introductory philosophy classes. I hope it sells well so that an expanded volume may be published which include new movies like Adaptation (Identity) and Million Dollar Baby (Bio Ethics).

This book provides a practical introduction to computationally solving discrete optimization problems using dynamic programming. From the unusually numerous and varied examples presented, readers should more easily be able to formulate dynamic programming solutions to their own problems of interest.

We also provide and describe the design, implementation, and use of a software tool, named DP2PN2Solver, that has been used to numerically solve all of the problems presented earlier in the book. This computational tool can be used by students to solve academic problems if this book is used in coursework, and by practitioners to solve many real-world problems if the state space is not too large.

Finally, this book is also a research monograph that describes a novel application of Petri net theory. DP2PN2Solver takes user input in the form of the DP functional equation for a problem, automatically constructs a Petri net model, called a Bellman net, as an internal computer representation for the DP problem, and then generates from the Bellman net the numerical solution for the DP problem. This solution can be obtained using Java, a spreadsheet, a Petri net tool, and other systems.

About the Author

Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He spent time as a school teacher after attending Harvard College but was dismissed for his refusal to administer corporal punishment. Thoreau is Wonderful

I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.

very interesting

This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.

Kissing for Beginners

In her book, "Seal it with a Kiss," Violet Blue covers a lot of bases on the subject of kissing, however, it is definitely geared toward women - which isn't bad but maybe there should have been a heads up, because if men pick up the book looking for advice, they'll be disappointed. On the other hand, they can definitely learn some things if they can put themselves in the woman's place. Violet sometimes seems to be talking to school girls, particularly when she discusses kissing games. Overall, the information is good but if you have experience kissing and you're looking for new ideas, you're better served going elsewhere - this book covers the fundamentals. However, I really liked the fact that she mentions and is a proponent of eye contact, which is very important in making a connection during a kiss. Summary: good for female beginners.

A Good Addition to the Basics

"Seal It With a Kiss" is a book by Violet Blue and published by Cleis Press. The book is miniature in size at seven inches tall and five inches wide. It has a pretty discreet cover that can be taken out in public. The book is 131 pages and broken into nine different chapters. The book takes about a half an hour to an hour to read straight through; it's not a long read.

The book is definitely intended for heterosexual females. It's written in an "I'm your best friend" type of language, so it's nice and laid-back. It seem to be written towards heterosexual women in their twenties who are currently playing the dating field. Most of the tips don't seem to be focused towards those in relationships, but it isn't hard to modify the slight language nuances to apply to your situation. Males or homosexuals could also easily apply the techniques given in this book.

This book isn't chock full of amazingly unique ideas, but it definitely has its fair share of quite a few novel concepts. Some of the information is stuff I feel like I've read before online and in Cosmo/women's magazines, but some of the information is actually very informative. I definitely learned some good stuff by reading this book.

The book covers a nice variety of topics. It includes things like specific kissing techniques, types of good and bad kisses, how to turn a bad kisser into a good kisser, what to do about hickeys and stubble-rash, party games to play with group kissing or just couple kissing, "advanced" techniques like flavored lip gloss and how to share your food/beverage during a kiss, and how to make your lips appear more kissable. It also talks about more "mental" aspects like how to accentuate the teasing before a kissing, how to form a connection during your kiss, and how to create suspense.

Overall, Violet Blue has made a pretty detailed book that, while not all novel (after all, how many different ways can you kiss?), still includes a very big chunk of new information that will turn you into a better kisser.

Even If You Think You Know How to Suck Face, You Can Still Learn a Lot From This Book

To be honest, I never thought there'd be that much to say about kissing, but Violet Blue has managed to provide some expert tips and make me think about kissing in new ways. I guess I figured it was something you either know how to do, or you don't, and she walks readers through every aspect, from prepping for a kiss, types of kissers, types of kisses and how to get the most bang for your puckering up.

Blue is funny, too, such as telling readers about the Zoolander kiss; "The Zoolander makes you feel like you're a pretty prop designed to make him look good as he poses, shifts, and gives his `sexy' face to the world while kissing you. Would he notice if you were gone? Probably not." Yes, she covers bad kissers too.

I like that she doesn't neglect kisses to other parts of the body than the lips, either. Personally, I'm a fan of the back and love kissing the shoulders, upper back, and also the chest.

Even if you think you're the best kisser in the world (I'm not that arrogant, but thought I knew the basics), you can learn how to make your smooches sizzle even more with these tidbits of mouth-watering advice. Bonus points: if you're an erotica writer, like me, you can also get some ideas for your next story, because kissing can sometimes be underrated in both real life and on the page. This book is both fun and informative and will, I hope, be beneficial to my boyfriend who is the recipient of most of my kisses!

Determined to save the last bit of her reputation, she proposes Liam a deal, a good reputation with his teachers, if he will ‘pretend’ to be her boyfriend, to stop the rumors. Katy deals with her parents’ divorce, her reputation being ruined and finds herself having more in common with Liam than she ever imagined. By the end, Katy can’t tell who is ‘pretending’ and who isn’t.

She really has a great voice!

Seriously, rating this book is a hard task. I'll start off with the good things...

I loved the story, but then I love pretty much any High School drama so that was to be expected. Katy and Liam are two characters I totally rooted for from the first line I read about them. The book is written in first person POV, which tends to be my favorite, but it's 16208124also written in present tense, which I really hate.

The story starts in the middle of the divorce of Katy's parents, and we get a good feel of her emotions here. She's hurt, she's angry, she can't understand what's going on and why her dad had to cheat with this awful woman from his office. At the same time her boyfriend abandoned her for a Barbie Clone, and to top it all her best friend Jen (an adorable and lovely side character) has to empty her seat in Science to make room for bad boy Liam Erickson. Katy is stuck with the guy for a project on...tada, sex. At this point I want to mention that there are so many parallels to the book HUSH, HUSH from Becca Fitzpatrick, that I really wondered if this was going to be a lousy copy. But the story soon goes into a different direction...thank God.

Katy tries to get Liam to do the assay with her, but he has other plans. Going to a party, particularly. She follows him, and when her ass-wipe of ex-boyfriend shows up with his new gf, Katy feels the need to do `something'. So what the hell, she just kisses Liam. Not a good thing to do in her situation. Within a minute she has the reputation of a rebound girl, class whore and what not (which was a little drastic in my opinion, but for the sake of the story, well...let the author have her way). To pull her neck out of the noose, Katy offers a deal to Liam. He becomes her pretend boyfriend and she helps him get a nicer reputation and better grades. Here I was wondering again why the boy would be looked at differently by the teachers only because he has a girlfriend, but again...it's part of a working story.

What the author managed brilliantly in this book is making the reader feel the chemistry between Katy and Liam. He's a bad boy, all right, but he's sexy, smart, dark and always has a perfect come back. The dialogue was the one thing that convinced me to read the book in the first place when I skimmed through the excerpt, and it kept going smoothly all the way to the end. Congratulations to the author for that.

Unfortunately, there were a few things that spoiled the book, and I think it's fair to say spoil here, because it totally destroyed the reading pleasure of what could be a YA bestseller. Apart from a bad habit to start almost every sentence with `I did this...and I did that...', the book was littered with typos. And it wasn't just the occasional misplaced comma. In fact, commas were all over the place, there were typos, grammar mistakes, and the author even got the names of her heroes wrong in several places. I'm a writer, too, and I know how hard it is to catch your own mistakes. But, honestly, that's why you have critique partners and proofreaders. If she'd done her homework, she would have produced an excellent teenage novel worth 5*. This way...well, I think 4* are okay. I really loved the characters and the story (except for a few inconsistencies like the thing about Liam's mother moving away and not getting in touch with him, then `oh-so-emotional" returning when Katy calls her).

I know this is partly a harsh review, but I'm always honest when I write something for someone. And if I didn't like the book so much, I wouldn't feel the need to write anything at all. Make sense? Good. :-)

In fact, I tried to contact the author and tell her all this personally, but there's nothing about her to be found in the web. Luckily, a writer friend of mine just informed me that all the mistakes were corrected in a late run of edits and a new file was uploaded. I believe that now everyone will love reading this book.

On a final note, it seems the author has also changed the cover picture over night, which is a very good thing, because the former one sucked. It had the same couple as are posted on every other teenage romance, and it really catches your eye...in a bad way. Love the new one!

Not the worst, but really not good.

This appears to be a first effort from a very young author - and it shows. The premise is good, if overdone (good girl matched up with bad boy in science class); however, the execution is wanting. There are way too many spelling errors for those of us who care. (When are all these e-book authors going to realise that spell-check does not an editor make?) As for the style of writing, it's probably better targeted to people under 13 years or those who wish they still were.

The heroine, Katy, flounces (yes, literally) her way through the novel - she slams down pens, yells out loud in class (sometimes even without any repercussion) and stomps her feet when things don't go her way. Frankly, she's having a bit of a bad time and she's not handling it particularly well.

The hero is not very well represented. He is sort of there, but mostly not. Consequently, it's hard to feel anything too much for him, though he does seem to get the best of the dialogue when he does manage some interaction; having said this, it's nowhere near as clever as some others have suggested. Speaking of which (pardon the pun), the dialogue is, as another reviewer noted, very stilted and quite unrealistic. Again, I believe this is the consequence of a very young writer.

Overall, it's not a shocking effort, but it really could be improved. Hopefully, the author will take time to perfect her craft (by starting with being way more careful with spelling and working on producing realistic dialogue), so that we will see better efforts from her in the future.

Just what I was looking for!

So, for me. This book really was something I needed. Lately I had just been going through book after book and not even finishing them. Until this one.

The One For Me was my first read of 2013, and it didn't disappoint.

So, we meet Katy, who is in High School, but we don't meet her on a good week.

First of all, she's not having the best week, due to her boyfriend dumping her for someone, and then we have her parent's divorce.

So, all is not well in the life of Katy.

Then she's forced to partner with Liam, who is the bad boy, and they have to study, sex.

This whole book was short, yet satisfying. I enjoyed being in Katy's head. She did cry a lot though, but I enjoyed the more... memorable times... like when Liam was there.

But not only did she partner up with him... She kissed him, just to make her boyfriend jealous.

AND ALAS, the relationship (fake or not) was born!

Liam has to be another male character that I add to the long list of males that made me want to be there. He was sweet, yet distant. He had a thing about him that made you want to just find out what he's all about.

And the way he liked to turn things around on Katy... Swoon.

But of course, I can't forget the best friend. She was an interesting character to read about, and I loved her appearances.

Okay, I'm done talking about the characters and I how I loved them. Layla, I hear, is a new author and judging by the reviews, she considers her readers thoughts. And, even though I'm not a huge fan of the present tense thing, I will read another one of her books, and hope the wait isn't that long.

Lady Merewen's family possesses a good magic that allows them to "communicate" with and care for the horses of the land. This gift provides the family and keep with a secure financial status. Their talent is passed to one member of each generation, and that family member is head of the household. However, when Merewen's father passed away, her evil Uncle Fagan stepped in and was awarded custody over the keep. His greed and desire for power has corrupted many men in the keep, and Fagan's neglect as all but broken the manor. After finding an ancient text that promises the help of the Warriors of the Mist, Merewen dares a trip to the River of the Damned to call upon the gods. And the gods answer her call by sending the fabled warriors to aid her.

The mythology of My Lady Mage isn't one hundred percent original, however it's different enough to make the story interesting. The world-building is subtle yet complete, drawing me in over the course of the book. The setting is similar to the historical lands of England, with god-sent immortal warriors in a river instead of a Lady in the Lake and King Arthur. Each of the five warriors have secrets and stories to share that will be divulged as the series progresses.

Right from the get go, there is an attraction between the Damned captain, Gideon and our heroine, Merewen. However for me, it read more like a father - daughter relationship in the early stages of the book. In fact, their first kiss was awkward and I didn't feel the romance at all. I also felt that early on there was almost too much "immediate" bonding - Merewen isn't phased at all by these mysterious men with their magical animal(ish) sidekicks. There was trust from the start and I felt it should have been earned.

However, as the book progressed, my early concerns were forgotten, and I was engaged in the story. The fates of Gideon's men are tied to his actions. He is judged after each calling, and if he fails to meet the gods expectations, they are all doomed to an afterlife of wandering alone in the dark. Gideon constantly weighs his decisions, and I admire his careful thought process. One such exchange that I felt was superbly executed was when Lady Merewen open's herself up emotionally and offers herself to Gideon. She is honest and so unsure, but willing to put it all out there knowing they may not have another chance. Her strength is amazing. Gideon wants her so badly, but must weigh his individual needs against the good of his men and what the gods will bless or condemn. The entire section was emotionally satisfying and even a bit romantic and smexy.

My Lady Mage is clearly the first "chapter" in a much larger tale. The warriors and Merewen may have won the battle, but the war is far from over. Fagan was only the pawn of the Duke, who is using dark magic. We have hints about what this man is capable of, but we have no idea what his ultimate goals are. The keep is safe for now, but the warriors only have a couple of months left in the land of the living to end the unidentified evil that is spreading.

In the end, I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the next story, Her Knight's Quest, coming March 2013. My Lady Mage is first and foremost a solidly-written fantasy, and the romance is secondary to the overall tale. The book lays the groundwork for the future of the series, which holds much promise. Although a fantasy story, it has a paranormal-historical feel that I think will appeal to a large audience.

Merewen possesses a power, a magical ability and it is with her power that she was able to keep her Uncle Fagan from truly destroying the Keep that she and her late-father had once loved and cherished. But Fagan needed Merewen in more ways than one, for she was to be a pawn in a game of Dark magic between Fagan and the elusive Duke Keirthan. And it was the Dark Magic that will force the Warriors to reconsider the exact nature of the evil surrounding the people of Agathia and the Keep where Merewen's people resided. Merewen, as true heir to the Keep, knew that Fagan's hold over the people was only temporary, but it was his cruel and evil temperament that brought both physical and emotional pain to many including his wife Alina.

We are introduced to Gideon's fellow Warriors of the Mist along with their `companions' in battle and life. The mage-marked Kane who silently bears the burden of a dark family history; Murdoch who knows that to act on his true feelings could result in sorrow for someone in who he has grown close: the scholar Duncan who continually searches for the truth behind the growing power of evil: and the young warrior Averel who stands tall and proud ready to protect everyone at a moments notice. But it is the warrior's individual companions known as Shadow, Hob, Scim, Ebony and Alabaster, and Kiva who will battle along side their banished brethren and know that even in hell, everyone needs to call someone or something their own.

There is a dark evil and magical power that surrounds the Duke and those he commands. The blood bond formed between Fagan and Keirthan will force Fagan into a alliance that he will no longer value and one that will ultimately end the lives of those he once trusted as well as his own. But it is the growing relationship between Gideon and Merewen that will reveal to the Damned that perhaps all is not hopeless, and that maybe the Lady of the River will look upon their centuries of duty and finally forgive them their mistake made so many years ago.

Alexis Morgan writes a wonderful tale about 5 Warriors Damned to suffer eternity under the watery depths of the river near the village of Agathia. The novel is fast paced, well developed and never falters. With the introduction of 5 warriors, there will be plenty of storylines and heroes to break your heart and win over any reader of both fantasy and romance. A great start to a new series. No longer able to stand by as her people suffer from her uncle's cruelty, Merewen calls upon the warriors of the mist for help. Having to earn redemption from the gods he and his men pledged their souls to, Captain Gideon is ready to fight to free Merewen and her people from abuse and neglect but soon realizes that something more sinister is at work. If Gideon and his men don't stop the dark magic from spreading across the land of Agathia, they will be eternally damned.

From the beginning, I was drawn to Merewen's altruism and courage. She risks a beating from her uncle by seeking out the river where legend says a band of warriors rest, waiting to be called upon by someone the gods deem worthy of their aid. She accepts the punishment because she'd risk anything to help her people be free. She demonstrates how brave and headstrong she is early on and continues to do so throughout the book as she defies her uncle and refuses to give in to Gideon's demand of her stepping aside and hide to stay safe. She has a modern way of thinking when it came to the place of women that made her easily relatable. All this, in addition to her unique ability to call upon horses, made her a fascinating heroine I could easily read more of.

After a terrible incident that cost innocent lives, Gideon and his men have spent centuries fighting battles in hopes one day the gods would consider them redeemed and allow them to pass on. Merewen is unlike any of the callers he's had before and he's unable to keep himself from getting personally involved with her. Gideon is a very impressive warrior and I loved the loyalty he had for his men. What I admired most about him was how, even though he would have preferred her tucked safely away, he respected and supported Merewen. I felt she was the real standout in this book but Gideon was great in his own right and deserving of the title champion.

The romance between Gideon and Merewen was not an over the top scorcher but exactly right for them. Because of what Gideon is and who he answers to, there are obstacles between them and I enjoyed watching them bring them down. Gideon is not the only warrior who allowed himself to fall for a woman. His fellow warrior Murdoch has eyes for the female who greatly suffered at the hands of Merewen's uncle. Their relationship is new and very delicate and I look forward to seeing how it grows.

What first starts out as a mission to free Merewen and her people turns into something much bigger. There's dark magic in Agathia that if it's not stopped, will overrun the land and bring suffering to all. I thought that this story was well integrated into what was taking place on Merewen's land and opened the series to interesting possibilities.

Led by a spirited and caring heroine, My Lady Mage was a fantasy adventure that didn't take long to completely pull me in. The characters, the romance, the plot, everything came together and made for a great read. I really hope each warrior gets their own book not just so I can learn more about them but also their unusual, and very cool, avatars. Each warrior has one, which includes a sassy mountain cat and a gargoyle with attitude, and I thought they added a fun twist to each character.

I think people who enjoy reading fantasy romance will really like this one.

An excellent book for children. Prompt delivery; product in excellent condition as advertised.

The text is very simple, but an important feature (which is sure to grab the attention of young truck lovers) is the captivating use of action verbs. The boys to whom I read this book, repeatedly, were soon quoting the text to me.

The use of everyday props (chairs, the fish aquarium, potted plants etc.) to produce the adventures of a little boy playing with his truck validates the imaginary play of a child and encourages his or her imagination to flourish unihibited when playing around the house.

The little boy in the story "sees" what they, themeselves, see; and it is a great source of joy to have this vision shared through a storybook.
