Urban development projects must be carried out in an integrated way on the basis of an explicit development strategy and a detailed plan. MinatoMirai21 is a proto type for urban development projects and has the potential to become a universal standard for these carried out elsewhere in the world. The features of this book are as follows. First, we have endeavored to present not a partial but a complete image of the development project. Second, we seek to provide a clear understanding through illustration of the book with plans and photos. Third, the authors have sought to provide technical evaluations of particular aspects of the plan and their use in practice. Fourth, there is a focus on continuous, dynamic, multi-dimensional project management. It should be possible for the reader to derive a clear overall image of the project and its aims, and a detailed understanding of each aspect of the project management process. It gives us great pleasure to publish this mature translation by Mr. John Blakeney who was worked closely with Hiroshi Kishida to ensure it conveys the meaning of the Japanese original.

Biographical Notes

Hiroshi Kishida was born in 1945 in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Having graduated in Architecture from Waseda University he went on to study for a Master’s Degree at the University of Tokyo. In 1969 he began work in the Yokohama City Government where he built up experience in many fields of urban planning including: land use planning, new town development, urban redevelopment and urban design; he has also attained a professional qualification as an engineer in the construction field. He finished his career with the city government as section chief for the urban planning section and director of community development law. For 4 years from 2005 he was an official in Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 Corporation, responsible for area management in the Minato Mirai 21 district. From 2007 he taught a course in Project Management at the School of Art and Architecture at Waseda University. He has been a Senior Visiting Research Fellow and a Senior Advisor to the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies since 2009. His previous publications are “Safety and Renewal in Urban Development” (joint author, published by Gakugei Publishers, 1999) and “Urban Planning and Regional Decentralization” (joint author, published by Gakugei Publishers, 2000). Morio Udsuki was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1953. He is an architect and urban designer. He graduated from Waseda University where he also completed a Master’s Degree. He studied abroad at the University of Stuttgart in former West Germany before working in the Urban Planning Offices in Stuttgart and Hanover. He also headed the Setagaya Ward Urban Design Office and Setagaya Community Development Center before taking up his present post as Professor of Design in the School of Art and Architecture at Waseda University. He also holds a PhD in Engineering. His publications include “Community Development and the Revision of City Centre Revitalization Law” (Chushin Shigaichi Kasseika Sanpo Kaisei to Machizukuri) (join author, Gakugei Publishers), and “Group Homes with a Courtyard for Elderly People” (Ninchisho Konensha, Nakaniwa no aru Gurupu Homu) (Editor, Hobunsha Publishers). John Blakeney was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1982. He graduated in Geography from Trinity College, Dublin before moving to Kyoto, Japan as a participant on the Japanese Government run JET Program in 2006. He lived, worked and studied in the country for the following 5 years, devoting much of his time to study of the Japanese language. He also spent 2 years conducting research for a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning at the University of Tokyo on urban regeneration policy and practice in Yokohama City Center through which he became involved in this project. A very comprehensive and informative book on Minato Mirai project

I am glad that this book has been translated into English. I have the orginal version in Japanese and examined it previously. Minato Mirai 21 project is one of the prominent waterfront redevelopment projects in Tokyo metropolitan area. It is an example of "flagship projects" of 1980s developed to revitalize urban economies and city centers. At present, Yokohama city is attempting to turn Minato Mirai into a showcase of environmental technologies and low-carbon urban environment. Hiroshi Kishida's book (might be the only book) provides essential information and also some data on this project. It is also possible to get an understanding of process management within a large scale urban regeneration project from this book. For students, researchers and academics who are interested in urban regeneration, I strongly recommend this book.

Mozart's Grace

This book is an extraordinarily intelligent, sensitive, and perceptive study of the details of Mozart's writing that makes his music so wonderful. It will, however, be, perhaps, more of value to readers who can read music scores than to those who cannot, since there are many long passages from various Mozart compositions throughout the book.

Thoughtful and Insightful

A good half of this books consists of musical scores, and since I'm not trained in music and cannot read it, all those pages were lost on me. Burnham's text, however, is very illuminating, and by actually playing recordings of the pieces cited, it's possible to follow his essays on what makes Mozart's music so very special. If you are an enthusiastic layman like me, don't be afraid to tackle this short book -- even shorter if you skip the scores. Come armed with a good memory or some compact discs, and enjoy the ride.

About the Author
Julie C. Van Camp is Professor Emerita of Philosophy at California State University, Long Beach, where she taught philosophy of law and applied ethics. Along with a Ph.D. in philosophy from Temple University, she holds a J.D. from Georgetown University. She has been admitted to the State Bar of California and the District of Columbia Bar. She is the author of two other Cengage Learning titles, including ETHICAL ISSUES IN THE COURTS and APPLYING ETHICS: A TEXT WITH READINGS.

Terrible book for most useless class in history!

Terrible book, unless you're looking for a cure for insomnia. You can read the book, and go back looking for particular mentionings in the chapter and never find it. Hiding material apparently is considered the best way to write an Ethics books, for the most useless class in history.

About the Author
Kwok Pui-lan, from Hong Kong, is the William F. Cole Professor of Christian Theology and Spirituality at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge. She was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Academy of Religion in 2009. Writing in both Chinese and English, she is the author of Discovering the Bible in the Non-Biblical World (Orbis, 1995) and the forthcoming 4-volume reference work on Women and Christianity (Routledge, 2010).

The Women Theologians Are Coming

The number of women theologians is increasing. More important than the numbers are the depth and insight and challenges that they present to churches. This book includes articles from different parts of the third world and from people of different denominations. A shift has already taken place. Whether this shift will shift into denominations more broadly is an open question. Want to be inspired and challenged? The cross is present in many forms but hope and Resurrection abound. Read this book.

Kwok Pui-lan has gathered a groundbreaking collection of essays written by third world and indigenous women, discussing context and theology; scripture; Christology; and body, sexuality, and spirituality. I recommend this for anyone interested in feminist/women's theology, and also for course use.

In this newest addition to the Unsung Americans series, Yates draws on a variety of sources to examine the life of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), perhaps best known today for writing "This Land Is Your Land" and for inspiring a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. While much of the book is devoted to Guthrie's role as a champion of the oppressed and underprivileged, the picture that ultimately emerges is of a troubled and immature dreamer who, in his quest for self-fulfillment, avoided his responsibilities to his family (three wives left him) and his employers. Emphasizing her subject's sensitivity to the political and social issues of his times, Yates discusses the changing climate of the country, explaining how these changes are reflected in Guthrie's music. Especially useful are her overviews of the growth of labor movements and the backlash against Communist organizers, the creation of social programs to counteract the Depression, and the effects of WWII on American society. Grade 6 Up?American history is vividly and candidly portrayed in this biography of one of our country's foremost balladeers. Woody Guthrie's story is at once a tale of personal tragedy, survival, and the turmoil created by poverty and natural disaster. Much of his life was played out against the devastating effect of his sister's death when he was six, poverty bred of the dust storms of 1935, and the Great Depression. The hardships faced as his family left Oklahoma for California where they became migrant farm workers is reminiscent of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. These experiences shaped Guthrie's social conscience and political outlook. Throughout his life, music was a constant, however, and the songwriter used the sounds around him and his concerns for the downtrodden as inspiration. In addition to being a wonderful historical account of American folk music and the times in which the subject lived, this book is also an absorbing read. A crisp style brings to life Guthrie's constant struggle against poverty and social injustice and his final fight against Huntington's chorea, a genetically linked disease. Gr. 6-10. From the age of six, when his older sister burned to death, Woody Guthrie experienced hardship. His mother's battle with Huntington's chorea, from which Woody also died, tore his family apart. When his father was seriously burned, and both parents were hospitalized, Woody was on his own at age 15. His fascination with the songs and stories of the migrant workers he often encountered helped his innate musical and writing gifts blossom. In spite of a personal life marked by marital strife, personal instability, and the tragic death of his four-year-old daughter (ironically, by fire), he wrote more than 1,000 songs and, like his close friend Huddie Ledbetter (better known as "Leadbelly"), popularized and preserved the traditional music of his forebears. Yates describes Woody's creative life and provides important historical information, including a harrowing description of the great dust storm of 1935 and its aftermath. Woody's friendly relationships with labor union organizers and members of the Communist Party, as well as his relationships with other musicians--Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan among them--add significant interest to this well-written biography.
