The author is a Harvard University Master Teacher who has taught at Harvard, Penn State, Juniata College, Lesley College, Boston State College, and in New York City secondary schools. He has been listed in Who's Who Among America's High School Teachers, and twice nominated for the Board of Trustees of the College Board. He also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the Harvard Educational Review, and has published numerous articles, book reviews, and op-ed pieces.

A Book That Should Be Read By Every Parent and Concerned Citizen!

This book is everything you would like if you want to read a current, conservative, and vibrant critique of the schools. Mr. Ludwig writes with humor and an unusual verve. He draws us to the real dangers of Common Core, the threat posed by undo left wing influence in the schools, the actual day-to-day horrors that exist in certain schools (students running wild), and the need for a revamped commitment to traditional educational values such as knowledge, compassion, character building, creativity, and the classic freedoms and Judeo-Christian values upon which America was built.
He never really answers how we are to shift away from the reformers and change agents who are ruining the system and returning more respect and authority to the individual classroom teachers (he has tremendous respect for the teaching profession), but he does point to one modality that will make a difference.... But I won't spoil it for you by saying here what that modality is.

An amazing book for anyone wanting to know about the importance of bricks!

George was the first husband of my college roommate. It is such a thorough exposition of anything to do with bricks that I was amazed as I read the book! It was purchased as a gift for a friend who collects bricks (Who knew there were such people?)! I have a much greater appreciation of the brick industry! The house I grew up in is mentioned on page 158, though he was mistaken, as it is still in private hands.

My friend has 3000 different bricks in her collection and regularly goes to "brick swaps" all over the country! My admiration for brick making is established with this book! The hard work involved astounds me!

I am the rock and roll king

Loved this book. I am a child of this continuing period of history and there was so much I did not know. I enjoyed the music samples as well with Rhapsody. Any rock fan should get this book, take the class, and listen to the music samplings. Enlightening. The history you thought you knew...

Someone finally got it right!!!!

After teaching a the college level "The History of Rock" I now have a text that allows the student access to the music we are studying ....legally.

I have not as yet finished the text (I am moving very slowly so I get to know the point of view, the accuracy of the information etc.)
Although I question some of the assumptions made by Dr. Larson, for example LED ZEPPELIN is called a Hard Rock Group by Larson. I am sure no one from the group would think that. And anyone who has seen them knows that nearly half their set was acoustic. A great Rock Band yes. HARD ROCK, no.

These are details are not worth mentioning (then why did you mention it?) especially when the text is very accurate and perhaps even more importantly, the structure and layout of the book is superb.
I think we have a winner.

Using Rhapsody is absolutely great. I brought the idea up in a faculty meeting when Rhapsody first came out. The Dean and Chair almost choked because that would mean we would loose all that lab time money if there was no reason to use the lab.
Now that the state now longer reimburses us now for lab work, I think it is time to try again.
I will be using the text with my 400 students in the spring.

Pragmatic approach to water resources

This textbook covers water resources and issues in the US from the viewpoint of an experienced professional. In addition to the chapter topics, sidebars are written by practitioners in various fields and locations. The book summarizes the major federal government agencies that deal with water resources, some state and local departments, and many of the topical not for profit organizations, all of which may help students understand what might be part of a profession in this field.

On the other hand, the book was not comprehensive on the ecology and ecological principles that are involved in water resources. The approach was far stronger in policy and regulation than in ecological considerations.

The value of this book in a course is, as usual, highly dependent upon how the professor uses the text in the course.

Explanations somewhat vague

The text seems as if it was written by an English professor rather than a scientist. The chapter headings are helpful, yet standard to the discipline. Somewhat disorganized, somewhat organized... not as thematic as usual. I used outside resources to understand some of the more fundamental phenomena related to water as the explanations are not entirely clear nor ordered.
Decent graphs/pictures and also background stories relating the text to the real world.
Probably not enough visual aids.

This book covers all aspects of water development in the US, with special emphasis on issues affecting the western US. Chapters cover water issues from history to diversion projects to water treatment and beyond. Well written, with lots of good case histories and thorough explanations for the non-scientist and the scientist alike.
