Family Violence

I really found this book helpful and full of information. I used it for a class that I was taking called family violence and abuse. Wallace does an excellent job outlining indicators of child abuse and he also provides different catergories of abuse such as elder abuse and alternative life style abuse. I often find myself struggling to use books assigned to each class because sometimes they are just not useful. I have spent lots of money on class texts that I have not opened once. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS BOOK. IT WAS VERY USEFUL.

This book was for a Criminology class

This book was for a Criminology class where the emphasis was of course on family violence seen from legal, medical, and social perspectives; but not limited in any capacity it delves into ritualistic, gay, and lesbian abuse. This book unveiled for me what family secrets are swept underneath the rug. For example, in a family they will know of a child molester so everyone stays away from Uncle Lester instead of turning him in, yet many times the aunt was touched or penetrated by him but her mother didn't believe her until it was too late. It also is enlightening about sibling abuse which steams a lot from them being molested and/or raped so they'll in turn do the same to a sibling since they are hurting. This book was very insightful and my professor really referenced it well.

If you were a Cop at Clark AB, you will enjoy this.

And even if you were not a Cop at Clark, this book shows some of what happened off base. I did really enjoy this book and do recommend it. I wouldn't mind reading a sequel to it. I was stationed at Clark AB 77-78 with the 3rd LES. I never worked Town Patrol, only gates and on base patrol. I had no idea of what the folks who worked Town Patrol had to put up with as far as the politics and even with the local Police. Plus all the drunk GIs and all that goes along with that. You all did have some interesting calls. I know I enjoyed working with the the Philippine Constabulary that worked some of the gates with us.

I do have a couple of questions for the author. In the book you refer to one of the bars as Firestone Empire. Is that supposed to be the legendary Fire Empire? And also you refer to Mt. Orian. Is that supposed to be Mt. Arayat? I always enjoyed the view of that mountain when I worked the main gate.

I hope you consider writing a follow up to this book, and maybe make it even a little longer.

As a former Security Policeman, serving at the same time as TSgt. Farr, I am reminded of my own service. The experiences in this book and the straightforward way they are told are right on. I was once told by another NCO that "there is no such thing as the peace time military". This book illustrates that perfectly. Great book, good job.

About the Author
Marcel Correa has been a racing enthusiast since the early years of his childhood. After graduating with degrees in industrial design in his native Uruguay and automotive design in Italy he developed transport, medical, graphic and corporate design projects. Looking for fresh challenges, he established his new life in Barcelona, Spain. He is approaching his true passion, illustrating technical articles, designing publication covers, and writing historical chronicles for motorsport magazines.

Great Images Good Read

As a newbie diecast race car collector, I need good reference material to be able to identify and familiarize myself with a plethora of race cars, especially the more obscure and forgotten race cars of yore. Actual photographs are indispensable for this purpose but not always helpful in scrutinizing car details, an aspect in which I find well rendered, accurate illustrations particularly helpful, if not just plain nicer to look at. This book Mythical Formula One has those illustrations. They are cleanly and painstakingly made, and accurate as far as I can see. They are a joy to behold.

But wait. The beauty of this book does not stop there. The truth is, I was reluctant at first to buy the book because the word "Mythical" in its title led me to suspect it might only be another repository of the usual popular and famous cars like Lauda's Ferrari 312 T2 or Senna's Lotus 99T. Illustrations of these cars abound everywhere. While this book does these cars justice, it lunges for the trophy by including less known and downright obscure (but still historically interesting) cars. Take the Rebaque HR100, Brett Lunger's McLaren M23 and Lella Lombardi's March 751 as but three examples.

Lastly, this book makes for a good read. Correa projects himself not only as a talented artist and knowledgeable F1 aficionado, but a witty one as well. History is not just retold, technical specifications are not just spewed out. They are presented in interesting context that lead one to see them in a new light. Chew on these subtitles to whet your appetite: The Weaker Sex? (Divina Galica), Arrogant Noses (Tyrell 019), and Long Live the Depression (Lotus 79).

I am not claiming to have read hundreds of F1 books and will not compare this one with any. What I will claim is I enjoy this book and will proudly show it to my fellow collectors. Too bad it is not an autographed edition.

Horrible translation into English

The artwork is nice, but very "flat" looking, in other words it had a lack of shading and detail. The book is oddly organized, and is only somewhat chronological. What really turned me off, however, was the horrible translation into English. The grammar was so peculiar that it actually gave me a headache while reading it. I had to read and reread to really grasp the essence of what he is saying. I speak some Spanish, and the grammar still looked odd even had it been a word-for-word literal translation. I would not have given it more than 4 stars had the text been correct, but as written, 3 stars is generous.
I respect the author for trying to put this together, and I certainly don't intend to return it, but the art wasn't good enough to make it a coffee-table book, and the text wasn't good enough to make it a historical reference.

Good information, bad editing

Lots of good information here, and a terrific friendly voice, but the text is arranged in chunks that are repeated and jumbled around (this is the kindle edition) and the result is the book is not linear and is just a little hard to follow. This would be a very helpful book if the editing for kindle had been a bit more careful.

Good, basic information about betta fish

Good, basic information about betta fish. I hope people who read it will come away with the knowledge that, although it is somewhat possible to keep bettas in small tanks, it is highly unadvisable. He, and many other responsible betta experts, tell you that the recommended size of a tank for a betta is 5 gallons, and never less than 2.5.

Though he does mention it, I wish he had spent more time writing about the Nitrogen Cycle, and the importance of "cycling" an appropriately-sized tank while setting-up and maintaining your aquarium. It keeps your tank healthy by building up beneficial bacteria that help, along with regular water changes, manage the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the water that affect the health of your fish. I urge people to try to look this information up. You can't "cycle" a small bowl, and that is one of the many reasons why small containers aren't recommended for bettas.

Also, while larger-sized water changes are needed if you in unwisely keep a betta in a small container, it is unadvisable to do very large/complete water changes and heaving cleaning of appropriately sized tanks. I'm not sure why he tells people to do this, unless he is referring only to the maintenance of small containers. You end up depleting the beneficial organisms that build-up in the substrate and decorations, as well as in the water, that help keep your tank healthy.

Overall, I think people will find this book to be helpful and I do recommend it.
