Corporate financial managers continually invest funds in assets, and these assets produce income and cash flows that the firm will then either reinvest in more assets or pay to the owners. Capital investment refers to a firm's investment in assets, and these investments may be either short-term or long-term in nature. A capital budgeting decision involves the long-term commitment of a firm's scarce resources. When such a decision is made, the firm is committed to a current and possibly future outlay of funds.

Capital budgeting decisions play a prominent role in determining whether a firm will be successful. The commitment of funds to a particular capital project can be enormous and may be irreversible. While some capital budgeting decisions are routine and don't change the course or risk of a firm, there are strategic capital budgeting decisions that will either have an impact on the firm's future market position in its current product lines or permit it to expand into a new product line. The annals of business history are replete with examples of how capital budgeting decisions have turned the tide for a company.

In Capital Budgeting: Theory and Practice, Pamela Peterson and Frank Fabozzi discuss and illustrate the capital budgeting decision process. In Section I ("Making Investment Decisions and Cash Flows"), they cover the stages of the capital budgeting process (investment screening and selection, capital budgeting proposal, budgeting approval and authorization, project tracking, and postcompletion audit), classification of investment projects, and the critical task of cash flow estimation.

In Section II, Peterson and Fabozzi cover the techniques for evaluating capital budgeting proposals and for selecting projects. These techniques include payback and discounted payback techniques, net present value technique, profitability index technique, internal rate of return technique, and modified internal rate of return technique. Section III clearly explains the critical task of incorporating risk into the capital budgeting decision.

In the final section, Peterson and Fabozzi explain a common capital budgeting decision: the decision to buy an asset with borrowed funds or lease the same asset. This is the classic "lease versus borrow-to-buy decision." The coverage includes valuing a lease, how to incorporate uncertainty into the lease valuation, and how a firm should analyze a lease if it's in a current tax-paying position or has an operating loss to carry forward.

About the Author
PAMELA P. PETERSON, PhD, CFA, is Professor of Finance at Florida State University where she teaches undergraduate courses in corporate finance and doctoral courses in empirical research methods. Professor Peterson has published articles in journals such as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, and the Financial Analysts Journal. She is the coauthor with David R. Peterson of Company Performance and Measures of Value Added and coauthor with Frank J. Fabozzi of Analysis of Financial Statements.
FRANK J. FABOZZI, PhD, CPA, CFA, is Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management and an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale University's School of Management. Dr. Fabozzi is on the board of directors of the Guardian Life family of funds and the BlackRock complex of funds. He earned a doctorate in economics from the City University of New York in 1972 and, in 1994, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Fabozzi is a Fellow of the International Center for Finance at Yale University.

I give it four stars ...because it is a very good introduction
and also useful to clarify basic concepts...but there are multiple errors in simple math operations ,they should have reviewed before printing..

I love this book because it is written in simple and straight forward language that makes it for a readers understaanding. Although it came rather too late for my capital budgeting course, it is worth having. Infact I struggled with a textbook that was hard to understand but that was the recommended book for the course. So after completing the course I decided to have a book as a reference and came across it and purchased. I am having my money's worth.

About the Author

Jane Lotter was a Seattle-based writer and humorist whose work has appeared in national publications. This book is a treasure. A delightful road-trip from Hollywood to New York's Pennsylvania Station (the old one, before they tore it down.) Sharp, sophisticated, and packed with enough wit to make Dorothy Parker proud.

SO MUCH FUN!

I can't remember the last time I've read a novel that just picked me up and sent me soaring through a plot line. Once exception might be the most recent (or any) edition of the "Tales of the City" novels. Understand, I'm not saying that this book is in anyway imitative of Maupin's novels. For one thing, there are far fewer characters and multiple story lines. I'm speaking of the experience of reading this. It has that same light, lovely and intoxicating mix of humor, drama and mystery. In other words -- it made me laugh, cry and totally unable to resist turning the page no matter how late the hour or how concerned I might be about being late for work as a result. Lotter writes in a wonderfully cinematic style, and it's easy to imagine an extremely captivating movie in this story's future. Highly recommended!

The Bette Davis Club is a fab mix of laugh-out-loud comedy, road-trip adventure, and one-of-a-kind characters who manage to make you laugh while also pulling at your heart strings. Definitely the best comic novel I've read in years.
